TK Expectations
- We all have come in with different strengths. The job of our TK class is to try and make sure that everyone has the skills they need to be successful in their next class.
What they need to know by the end of TK:
Reading Readiness:
Knowing all the letter names, both Capital/Upper Case (Ex: ABC) and lower case (Ex: abc)
Knowing the sounds the letters make
Writing the Upper Case and lower case letters
Writing their name in correct order
Understanding rhyming words
Being able to retell a favorite story
Being able to draw a picture of themselves
Being able to draw a picture that will tell a story
Math Readiness: - Counting objects by touching them correctly to 20
Writing numbers to 10
Recognizing the numbers to 10, in any order
Knowing basic shapes (Ex: circle, triangle, rectangle, oval, diamond)
Knowing colors names (Ex: red, blue, yellow, orange, purple, green, pink, gray, brown, black, white)
Sorting objects by size, by color, and by shape
Making simple patterns of objects (Ex: blocks can be red-blue-red-blue, toys can be big-little-big-little)
Comparing two groups of objects to say which has more, which has less
Motor Skills: - Being able to hold a pencil correctly
Beginning to have control over their coloring and writing (from a scribbling effect to a more controlled coloring)
Cutting different shapes easily (ability to cut on a given line, make curves and cut zigzag lines)
Gluing appropriately (not using the entire glue stick on one piece of paper, being able to use glue without a puddle)
Being able to run, jump, hop, skip, throw and catch a ball
Taking care of their own bathroom needs
Social and Emotional Growth:- Being able to listen to a story read by the teacher
- Following school and classroom rules
- Playing well with others
- Working well on their own and in a small group of children
- Being able to separate from their parent/caregiver
I know this is a lot!! But in order to be successful in the next year of Kindergarten, these skills must be strong. I want your children to be leaders and that takes the belief in their abilities.
